RSC Anderlecht’s Davide Rigon was the star performer at round 8 of Superleague Formula at Adria International Raceway as he took two race wins, a €100,000 cash prize and put himself back into championship contention.

Starting from pole position, the Italian won race 1 with an assured display despite briefly losing his lead to Beijing Guoan’s John Martin during the pit stops.

An eighth place finish in the reversed-grid race 2 secured Rigon’s place in the Super Final, which he promptly won after defending furiously from FC Basel’s Max Wissel.

His results mean he has narrowed the gap in the league table to new leader Craig Dolby (Tottenham Hotspur) and the second place Yelmer Buurman (AC Milan) who were both involved in a controversial incident in the opening event.

Starting eighth and ninth, Dolby got ahead of his rival early on, but after the pit stops Buurman tried to get back past only to run wide and brake his front wing and puncture Dolby’s left-rear tyre.

They both finished well down the order after pitting for repairs, but Dolby’s second place in race 2 saw him retake the lead at the top of the standings.

Other strong performances came from Superleague Formula debutant Ben Hanley who finished third in both race 1 and the Super Final, while Liverpool’s Frederic Vervisch qualified for the Super Final in his first race weekend in the series.

Another happy man at Adria was Sevilla’s Marcos Martinez.

After struggling in the first race with a misfire, the Spaniard bounced back in race 2 to score his maiden victory and become the 12th different race winner so far this year.

Duncan Tappy (Flamengo) also kept his record of finishing on the podium in at least one race of each round he’s taken part in this year with a fine third place finish in race 2.

Alvaro Parente wasn’t as fortune in the FC Porto car despite showing strong pace all weekend. He was forced wide in the first turn in race 1 and ended up sixth having started third and in race 2 he climbed from tenth to fourth only to be handed a stop/go penalty after a pit stop infringement by his team.
